Judge Orders the Sale of Carto Mansion

Friday, June 15, 2001

As expected, Judge Runston Maino of California Superior Court in Vista, California, today ordered the sale of the hillside estate of Willis and Elisabeth Carto. Proceeds from the sale of the Escondido estate will be used as partial payment of the $12 million the Cartos owe Legion for the Survival of Freedom, parent corporation of Institute for Historical Review. They owe this money as the result of having been found liable in November 1996 for the illegal diversion of millions of dollars given to LSF/IHR in the late 1980s.

By law, the Cartos have 30 days to appeal the order. The estate may be sold 120 days after the expiration of the appeal period.

Maino also set for July a hearing on motions for the contempts of Willis and Elisabeth Carto for failure to turn over documents, and answer questions about their assets.
